These are photos Starting in October 2007-April  2009…..More to come. The first is my face very huge . This was the last straw photo, the one with me in the Black shirt.I think everyone has a last straw place when change must happen.I was feeling so tight in my pants my belly is fat anyhow and it protruded over my pants.I got tired of my fat face.I was a thinner girl back when I married in 1977.OMG ,I was always chunky but I can’t believe I let myself get this big for my short body. Its a shame and now I am paying the price.I went on my raw food journey 2 months before my 50th birthday. So these photos are a start of my journey to health. It gives an idea of the size of my body, what it looked like. There has already been a difference in my body fat shrinking when I look at the photo above with the blue shirt.Well I see a better difference in me now already and that photo was approx. 8 months ago.I am only 5 feet 1.5 inches tall………So I have a ways to go to be where I need to be for my height.Keep checking back as I go on this journey.

tropical-fruitsAfter seeing and hearing Matt & Angela Saturday and listening to there stories(Saturday April 11th,2008),I will do all 100% RAW.I made a pledge to myself and I also told Hubby the same.I have met more an more guys and gals in my state,so it becomes enjoyable to learn from others as its a learning journey. This is my 3rd Challenge with the BUNNY group and I stay HIGH RAW NEVER junk food ,but yesterday was Easter and I ate all RAW,salad, green beans,mango/blueberry fruit salad in the PM with banana/peach icecream…Not the PROTEIN I should of taken in BUT I was proud that I didn’t eat any mac or potato salad …..Thats so big for me! But the more I eat RAW I want RAW…..I will make videos maybe once a week we will see……

Now today is the real Challenge can I stay RAW and Vegan if Raw is not available.I don’t live near Seattle where they have 2 RAW restaurants to go to if food isn’t made at home by myself of my husband .We have NO RAW eating places where I live.I truck to Seattle often though, almost weekly. If thats what I have to do to stay on my raw path then that is what I will do.

Hiatal Hernia and Gerd (acid reflux) April 10, 2009

A hiatal hernia is a protrusion of a portion of the stomach through the muscular ring at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. Usually, this common occurrence causes no symptoms, but sometimes the lining of the protrusion becomes inflamed, causing heartburn, belching, distention, problems swallowing and regurgitation.gerd

What is acid reflux?
Also called acid regurgitation, acid reflux is a common condition in which stomach acid flows backward up the esophagus (the tube carries food from the mouth to the stomach), causing symptoms such as a burning feeling in the chest (heartburn) and a bitter or sour taste in the mouth. These symptoms usually last a few hours after a meal and then go away. Most people experience acid reflux from time to time, usually after eating certain foods. Acid reflux that occurs more than twice a week is called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This is a more serious condition that, left untreated, can lead to problems such as inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) and a precancerous condition called Barrett’s esophagus. GERD can also worsen asthma, chronic cough, insomnia, and pulmonary fibosis.

Changing my eating habits was key to ridding  ofmy heartburn feeling.i first worked on NOT waking up to coffee.I always had milk or nonfat creamer in my coffee ,I never had it black. That didn’t matter. It was really hard to stop the coffee, but was worth feeling better once I stopped coffee.I drank tea with caffeine at first then changed to non caffeine teas.I also realized that tomato products bothered me ,let alone getting an itchy upper back almost always (several hours) after having anything from  salsa,to marinara sauce to anything related to a tomato.Ginger in tea helps me feel better too.

I STARTED A RAW FOOD DIET. I eat nuts ,seeds, fruits, vegetables, seaweed, and some grains. My life has changed for the better once I ate real wholesome foods.I am not a pure raw foodist ,but eat a vegan when not all RAW !I am working on being what we call a “High Raw Diet”.It makes me feel good and until you try it you will know what I have experienced. Its great.

YUMMO JUICE with Beet,Dandelion,Carrot,Lemon,Apple, and Ginger April 9, 2009

beetsBeets:They are a root vegetable known for its brilliant crimson-purple color-and its cancer-fighting potential. The compound that gives beets their characteristic hue, betacyanin, has proven to be a cancer-fighting agent, especially against colon cancer. In animal studies, diets high in beet fiber increased special immune cells in the colon responsible for detecting and eliminating abnormal cells, which led to fewer pre-cancerous changes in the colon. Beetroot extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumors, thereby preventing chemically induced cancers of the liver, skin, spleen, and lungs.
Beets may promote colon health in other ways, too. Beets are one of the richest sources of glutamine, a detoxifying amino acid essential to the health and maintenance of the intestinal tract. A deficiency of glutamine creates a state of imbalance in the gut bacteria, leaving an individual vulnerable to unfriendly organisms or the passage of bacteria into the bloodstream. Adding beets to your diet thus assists in keeping your digestive and immune systems healthy.

dandelionDandelion: In India, dandelion root is used as a remedy for liver disorders. It is considered an excellent diuretic, largely because of it high potassium content. While pharmaceutical diuretics tend to deplete the system of potassium, the mineral’s abundance in dandelion root ensures that the body will not suffer the side effect of potassium loss from the use of dandelion as a diuretic. In addition to potassium, dandelion root also contains high levels of sodium that help to balance electrolytes in the blood. This quality makes the plant useful in restoring balance after severe vomiting. Dandelion root can also help neutralize acids in the blood, and it is widely used as a mild laxative as well. People with liver ailments, such as jaundice and cirrhosis, can take dandelion root to help induce the flow of bile from the liver, helping to detoxify the body. Dandelion root also aids digestion, and it is an excellent tonic for the endocrine system. In addition, dandelion is used to lower cholesterol and uric acid levels in the body, and its rich iron content makes it useful for treating anemia. The juice in the stem and root of dandelion can be used as an astringent to dry up warts, blisters, corns and acne

carrotCarrots:Carrots can improve the appearance of the skin, hair and nails. When taken daily it can lower cholesterol nd blood pressure. Raw contain beta-carotene, a strong antioxidant that can prevent cancer. Carrot juice when taken everyday prevent bodily infections and is claimed to be valuable for the adrenal glands (the small endocrine glands situated above the kidneys). Carrots can help improve eyesight. Carrots can help increase menstrual flow. Carrots can regulate blood sugar.  And finally carrots can promote colon health, because carrot is rich in fiber.

lemonLemons: In traditional medicine, the lemon is widely known for its healing powers and is used in many different ways. Although the lemon is often thought of as acidic, it is very effective in curing many digestion problems when mixed with hot water, including biliousness, nausea, heartburn, disorders of the lower intestines like constipation and worm infestations. Lemon juice, when taken regularly in the morning, acts as a tonic to the liver and stimulates it to produce bile making it ready to digest the day’s food. It is also thought to help dissolve gallstones. Because of its high vitamin C content, it is thought to help prevent and treat many infections, hasten wound healing and temper down high fever. Lemon juice also relieves symptoms of asthma, tonsillitis and sore throat.Lemon is also a diuretic. This means it is good for people with urinary tract infections and high uric acid problems, such as those with arthritis or rheumatism because it helps flush out all the toxins and bad bacteria.

grannysmithGranny Smith Apple: Apples are chock full of vitamin C and antioxidants, and eating apples has been shown to help prevent several different types of cancer. High in flavonoids, phytonutrients, and other naturally health beneficial nutrients, apples are particularly tasty and useful for maintaining a healthy diet. High in fiber, bulky for the number of calories apples contain, apples may also help aid with weight loss and lowering cholesterol when eaten in place of higher fat and sugar content foods.

gingerrootGinger:Ginger has been proven to be very effective in alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. Studies show that ginger root is effective for airplane, automobile, boat trips, and train travel. Ginger reduces all symptoms that are associated with motion sickness including nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and cold sweating.

IMPORTANT: People who are taking medications for diabetes should use dandelion root with caution, as it may intensify the blood sugar lowering effects of those drugs.

New Research shows how Broccoli reduces cancer April 6, 2009

broccoliThere’s an abundance of scientific evidence today to suggest that fruits and vegetables can aid in cancer prevention. In the last decade, researchers uncovered one compound in particular that’s a potent anti-cancer agent. Sulforaphane is most highly concentrated in broccoli, as well as in other cruciferous vegetables, such as Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower. According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, animal studies to date have shown that sulforaphane can dramatically reduce the number of malignant tumors, reproduction, growth rate and size, as well as delay cancer onset. Some research findings suggest that sulforaphane might exert its anti-cancer effects by activating detoxifying proteins in the body known as ‘Phase 2 detoxifying enzymes’ [Proc Natl Acad SciUSA 1997 Sep 16;94(19): 10367-10372]. The role of these special enzymes appears to be scavenging for cancer-causing molecules.

Now a new study adds to these positive reports about sulforaphane by proposing that the compound may additionally play a more direct role in cancer prevention by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis [Cancer Res2000 Mar 1;60(5):1426-1433]. After treating human colon cancer cells with sulforaphane, the researchers found a number of chemical and structural cellular changes that indicated cancer cells were being killed off by the compound. The study authors also go on to explain that broccoli contains a stable sulforaphane precursor (isothiocyanate), which causes broccoli to release its sulforaphane content when the vegetable is chewed or chopped.

Earlier research at Johns Hopkins University found that sulforaphane blocked the formation of mammary tumors in rodents treated with a potent carcinogen [Proc Natl Acad SciUSA 1994;91:3147-3150]. Results showed that the number of rats that developed tumors was reduced by 60%, the number of tumors they developed dropped by 80%, and tumor size decreased by 75%. Other research by the American Health Foundation showed that sulforaphane inhibited the appearance of premalignant lesions of colon cancer in rats [Proc Natl Acad SciUSA 2000;41:660]. And, almost a decade ago, scientists had found that sulforaphane boosted the activity of two detoxifying enzymes—quinone reductase and glutathione transferase—in experimental mice [Proc Natl Acad SciUSA 1992 Mar 15;89(6):2399-2403]. As a result, scientists speculated that sulforaphane may regulate the metabolism of carcinogens, possibly by helping to neutralize harmful molecules and minimizing the oxidative damage that predisposes cells to cancerous growth. Now the latest research adds another piece to the puzzle that explains how sulforaphane goes about subduing cancerous growth and development.

Folic acid and vitamin B12 save lives and money

An eye-opening study published in the August 22, 2001 edition of the Journal of American Medical Associationconcluded that supplementation with folic acid and vitamin B12 would result in a tremendous increase in health and longevity of the American population at a low cost, while saving 24 billion dollars in healthcare costs over the coming decade.

Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco studied available data on U.S. homocysteine levels. Even modestly elevated homocysteine levels are associated with higher incidence of stroke and heart attack, as well as with increased mortality from cardiovascular disease. A previous study showed that folic acid could lower homocysteine by 25%; the addition of vitamin B12 led to a further 7% drop. The potent homocysteine-lowering effect of folic acid was also demonstrated by a decrease in homocysteine levels in the U.S. population since 1998, when the FDA mandated folic acid enrichment of cereal products. This enrichment alone should produce a 13% decrease in heart disease and mortality in men, and 8% in women.

This study projects that if people diagnosed with heart disease and/or high homocysteine use a 1 mg supplement of folic acid and .5 mg of B12, there should be 310,000 fewer cardiovascular disease-related deaths in 2001 to 2011. The cost of vitamin therapy would be very low compared to the cost of other treatments.

Note that the authors of the study recommend, at least for individuals at increased risk, a dose of folic acid much higher than the official recommended dosage. It should also be noted that folic acid is better absorbed from supplements than from food.

Lutein helps prevent atherosclerosis

Lutein, the yellow carotenoid found in egg yolks and green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, is best known as a nutrient that helps protect against macular degeneration. Now lutein has also been shown to be effective against atherosclerosis. A recent University of Southern California study on the cardiovascular effects of lutein consisted of three parts. The epidemiological portion of the study measured levels of serum lutein at baseline and 18 months later in a group of 480 men and women aged 40 to 60, enrolled in the Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study. The subjects had no history of heart disease. Those with the highest serum lutein (the upper 20%) had the least increase in carotid artery thickness: 0.004 millimeters versus 0.021 millimeters for those in the lowest 20% of serum lutein, a fivefold difference. This finding was confirmed in the mouse model. The atherosclerotic lesions in mice supplemented with lutein were 43% smaller than in controls.

The in-vitro portion of the study compared tissue culture of cells from the inner wall of human carotid arteries pretreated with various doses of lutein in terms of LDL-induced migration of monocytes, a type of large white blood cell that plays a major role in the progression of atherosclerosis. Lutein inhibited monocyte migration in a dose-dependent manner, higher doses being most effective in preventing monocyte recruitment.

This study suggests that lutein may be of crucial importance in preventing atherosclerosis.

Colon/Detoxification April 2, 2009

What Is Detoxification?

Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from the body or neutralizing or transforming them, and clearing excess mucus and congestion. Many of these toxins come from our diet, drug use, and environmental exposure, both acute and chronic. Internally, fats, especially oxidized fats and cholesterol, free radicals, and other irritating molecules act as toxins. Poor digestion, colon sluggishness and dysfunction, reduced liver function, and poor elimination through the kidneys, respiratory tract, and skin all add to increased toxicity.

Detoxification involves dietary and lifestyle changes which reduce intake of toxins and improve elimination. Avoidance of chemicals, from food or other sources, refined food, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and many drugs helps minimize the toxin load. Those lifestyle changes are a direct result of choices you make in your life. Transcendental meditation has helped me make marked improvements in not only my health and behavior but all aspects of my life. I highly recommend you look into it .

When detoxifying your colon, it is also important to incorporate probiotics in your diet to replenish your intestinal flora.

Colon cleansing
Bowel movements are the basis of your health. If you don’t have at least 1 bowel movement per day, you are already walking your way toward disease. Man’s body has not changed very much in the past several thousand years… however man’s diet has certainly changed a lot. All the refined sugar, white flour, hormone/antibiotics-filled meats we constantly ingest constitute an assault on our bodies. We are continuously violating our bodies by eating terrible foods. Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

So, all congestion and toxins must be removed, and it must begin with cleansing of the bowel.

One of the most frequent bowel problems that people experience today is constipation.

A constipated system is one in which the transition time of toxic wastes is slow. The longer the “transit time,” the longer the toxic waste matter sits in our bowel, which allows them to putrefy, ferment and possibly be reabsorbed. The longer your body is exposed to putrefying food in your intestines, the greater the risk of developing disease. Even with one bowel movement per day, you will still have at least three meals worth of waste matter putrefying in your colon at all times.

Disease usually begins with a toxic bowel. Those having fewer bowel movements are harboring a potentially fertile breeding ground for serious diseases. Infrequent or poor quality bowel movements over an extended period of time may be very hazardous to your health.

Staying Raw April 2, 2009

You’ve cantalope-face1just made one of the most crucial, health-affirming decisions in your life – you’ve decided to stop consuming cooked foods. Now the real adventure begins – how to stay on your raw food path. Not only are you swimming upstream, against the currents of your surrounding social life, but you are also hearing diverse and conflicting messages about what you should and shouldn’t be eating. You must remain strong and steadfast in your sense of purpose.

The first thing to realize is: eating raw foods should bring you a positive state of personal empowerment and great clarity. Only you need to decide what to put into your body, and soon you will be able to listen to your body tell you what it wants. Don’t worry about being 100% raw. The more raw, unprocessed and organically grown foods you eat, the better you will feel. And if you succumb to temptation and eat something ‘bad’, don’t beat yourself up about it. The fact is that after you’ve been raw for a while, you will have such terrible side effects from ingesting cooked food that you won’t need to torture yourself mentally. Just step back onto your path and treat yourself to something nice, your favourite raw treat. Try to surround yourself with other raw-food people. There is a burgeoning community of us here on the lower mainland with regular potlucks and social gatherings. Get out and socialize, share ideas and recipes, offer to help others and don’t be afraid to ask for support in return. It’s not an easy path to follow, and just as life has its ups and downs, peaks and valleys, so does staying raw.

We are constantly being tempted by the sights and smells around us as cooked food smells so good, especially when those odors are subliminally associated with the comfort foods of our childhood. It’s just an illusion though, the hollow facade of so many things that we are expected to consume in a spiritually bankrupt society that is based on conspicuous consumption. Turn off your television, stop being bombarded by those subliminal messages that tell you what to eat, how to look and live your life. Go into a supermarket and observe the way people stare at the packaging of those lifeless foodstuffs that have been processed and packaged for the shelf. They’re no longer buying what’s inside; they’re just consuming the idea, the image on the package. It’s scary! This is important to remember that when you find yourself craving something cooked.

Decide on alternative, uncooked treats that you can have to satisfy those cravings. Once you lose the taste for cooked food, you will be amazed at how good raw organic foods taste, how satisfying it feels in your tummy. Things like baby carrots, grapes, cherry tomatoes, radishes, plums, celery sticks and sweet peppers become great snack foods. Don’t be afraid to experiment with food. Eating raw is about being creative and celebrating the spontaneity of life. Have fun with your food and explore the endless variety of naturally grown fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. Try shopping locally and seasonally, supporting organic growers and markets. Make up your own dishes, or take cooked food recipes and convert them into raw ones. Sometimes it might not work and you’ll end up throwing out your creation, but usually it turns out surprisingly good, which will give you such a positive, satisfying feeling.

Listen to ideas of other raw foodists and try them out if they sound worthwhile, but ultimately it is for you to decide what works best for your body. There are no rules! More and more, raw foodists are succumbing to what is known as ‘the guru game,’ where an assertive and often self-righteous personality decides what you should be eating. Try to listen impartially to what is being said, and then make your own informed decisions, taking care to observe the effects of different foods on yourself. Always be mindful of the great benefits of what you’re doing. You are creating positive thought and intention in a world that is suffocated by negativity. You are helping the environment by eating organically grown foods in their natural state, saving considerable costs of energy that is used to process and cook foods, and eliminating the wasteful packaging that ends up in the garbage that is suffocating our natural world.

Support yourself in this great endeavor by finding a regular spiritual practice like meditation, yoga or Tai Chi, and try to spend as much time as you can out in the natural world amongst the trees and by the ocean, away from the polluting effects of artificiality. It is important that you breathe fresh air and absorb natural sunlight into your skin and eyes; a vital part of any raw food diet. Most importantly, always trust your intuition and let the fruits of creation guide you in living a healthy and conscious existence.

What’s Raw:

When making the change to a raw plant based diet, it can often become confusing as to what foods are really in a natural, unheated state. Obviously fruits and vegetables in their natural state are usually no problem, but when it comes to nuts and any dried (processed) items, everything is not always as it seems! Many so-called raw food recipe books use ingredients that are not raw at all. Ideally, everything should be eaten in a whole, unrefined, unprocessed state, but especially for those of us making the transition, this is not always practical or very much fun. Therefore we present this informal guide to what is really raw in the world of raw foods. This is certainly not the final word on the subject, but will be changed and added to as new information becomes apparent. To that end your comments and information (please quote your sources) are always welcome!

1. Braggs or Bronners Liquid Aminos - this is one of the worst substances touted in raw recipes. It is definitely not raw! Avoid soybeans completely, they are not or never have been intended for human consumption. All soybean crops are now genetically modified (GMO), even the so-called ‘organic’ ones (There is much controversy as to whether such a thing actually exists). The soybeans must be cooked (boiled) for these concoctions, and much salt is added. Still think this stuff is benign? Drink a glassful of it and let us know how you feel! For more info about soy check out this link.

2. Nama Shoyu (natural soy sauce) - Same as above, the soybeans are boiled to make this condiment, and although fermentation makes soy products into a somewhat digestible food, it is still cooked and salted.

3. Miso - another fermented soy product, made with boiled beans.

4. Honey - Whether you are completely Vegan or not will determine your use of honey, since it is an animal product. If you decide to use honey, it is important to note that this product can still be labeled raw even though it is often heated up to 160 degrees F. However there is true raw honey, generally sold by local farmers. Know your source!

5. Dried Fruit - Most commercially sold dried fruit (including raisins) has been heated to temperatures ranging from 150 to 180 degrees F. Ideally you should dehydrate your own fresh fruit or seek out a source for naturally sun dried items. Plus, you should be eating as much fresh fruit as possible; any dried or dehydrated food is going to dehydrate you.

6. Dates – Not only are commercially grown dates heat dried, they are also often steamed afterwards to plump them up. These dates have a shiny appearance and smooth texture. It is difficult to get information on specific growing techniques but it would appear that some organic dates from North America and those from the Middle East are still grown in a traditional way, i.e. sun dried and not steamed.

7. Sun-dried Tomatoes – Same as dried fruit, most commercial varieties have been heated. Make your own, if you can’t use sun power then put them in the dehydrator.

8. Nuts - Once nuts are out of the shell, they start to decompose; yellowing of the meat indicates rancidity, don’t eat them. Nuts are usually harvested in the fall, try and get them in the shell or from a reliable source that can guarantee their freshness.

9. Cashews – these are a special problem, because they require heat to be removed from their shells. There is now a mechanical process for shelling cashews, but these are definitely a specialty item and need to be purchased from a reliable source.

10. Spices – Same as dried fruit, most dried spices have been heated and irradiated if imported. Try to use fresh spices as much as possible – grow your own!

11. Nut Butters – Most of these are made with roasted nuts, but even when they say they’re raw, they’re usually not. (e.g. Marantha Raw Tahini is heated to 170 degrees F). Make your own in a food processor or a Vitamix using soaked nuts.

12. Salt – This stuff is addictive! Table salt is much worse than Celtic sea salt, since it is usually baked and bleached with other substances (sugar, iodine) added afterwards. It is in fact indigestible by the human body, and is an intestinal irritant. I don’t feel that any kind of dried salt is good for humans, our cells need to maintain a crucial balance of sodium and potassium and consuming dried salt upsets that ratio. Whenever I consume any of these salts now, my eyes are sore and swollen the next day. Surprisingly, many raw food ‘gurus’ are still addicted to this stuff! Get your salt from sodium rich vegetables like celery, tomatoes, and seaweed. Iodine? On the West Coast we don¹t need to worry about it, it’s in the air here (evaporated from the ocean) and absorbed through the skin.

13. Oils - Most oils are heated during processing, and any made from nuts or seeds quickly becomes rancid. Olive oil is the best choice but make sure you use organic cold pressed extra virgin oil. And use sparingly, it is still a processed, unnatural foodstuff.

14. Seaweeds – Most Japanese seaweeds are pastuerized, especially hijiki and arame. Whole dulse is usually unprocessed, but dulse flakes tend to be floor scraps with lots of extraneous material (like shells) mixed in. Green Nori is cooked, the black variety is raw.

15. Maple Syrup - Again, often called for in raw recipes, but unfortunately this one is boiled, often in pots greased with pig fat. It is a very nutritious food, and works amazingly well in the Master Cleanse fast, but there’s no way around the fact that it’s cooked…

16. Vinegar - It can be raw (usually the apple cider variety) but it contains acetic acid, a toxic chemical (that is used as a pesticide). Use lemon or lime juice instead.

17. Olives - There are raw (green) olives around, but it requires some searching to find them. Occasionally, R.F.S.B.C. members offer them on the mailing list. Otherwise, commercial olives are boiled and/or soaked in vinegar or lactic acid brine. Not good for raw food tummies!

18. Green powders and nutritional supplements - Most of them are heat dried or freeze dried. If you feel the need to take supplements you should thoroughly investigate their source and means of production.

19. Mangos – There is rumour that all commercial mangos are being boiled before being brought to North America, but I have not yet had this information verified. Also, it has been suggested that all fruit traveling to or through the U.S. is irradiated. If anyone has substantiated facts regarding this, let us know…

20. Papayas - All commercial Hawaiian crops are now genetically modified , organic ones are not…
This list was researched and compiled with many thanks for contributions from John Kohler, and the Eugene Raw Foods Community Bulletin Board.
